Can Garlic treat a Yeast Infection?

garlic yeast infection treatment

Yeast infections are a relatively common occurrence for women. From some report 75 percent of all women have or will have at least one vaginal yeast infection in their life.

Garlic is known to have positive biological effects on the immune system, cardiovascular system, cancer, and other conditions. It is also known to slow the growth of Candida fungus that causes yeast infections. Read on to find out if you should use garlic to cure yeast infection.

What is a yeast infection?

Most yeast infections in women are vaginal. They are caused by an infection of a fungus of the family Candida. These yeast cells naturally exist within your vagina, but an imbalance of other good bacteria can cause the yeast to multiply.

Symptoms of yeast infections typically include:

  • itching or soreness of your vaginal area
  • burning sensation or discomfort around the vagina
  • painful sexual intercourse
  • thickness, white discharge

Can I use garlic for a yeast infection?

Garlic is known for its antibiotic qualities. Allicin – the main biologically active component of garlic – has antibacterial and antifungal properties and is used in medical treatment and studies.

Although there is no definite medical answer if garlic can cure a yeast infection, allicin can be used to prevent yeast infections or improve current conditions, especially when it is used together with a regimen like the Candida diet or drugs.

How to use garlic for a yeast infection

Garlic can be administered orally or topically. Oral tablets are typically in the form of allicin, but garlic can also be eaten raw or inside food to promote good bacteria and prevent the growth of Candida albicans yeast.

You can buy garlic extract or tablets on the counter. Be sure to read the labels regarding the dosage.

Topical garlic extract cream is also available. Most creams are labeled for external use only, which means that you should only use them around the outside of your vaginal area. If a burning sensation occurs, clean the cream with a fresh cloth.

Whether you use oral or topical garlic for a yeast infection, consult your doctor to determine if it is a good course of action for you to take.

Studies of garlic and yeast infection

Medical studies have tested the effectiveness of garlic on various diseases, but I have not been large or high-quality studies. In a 2006 study, garlic was tested against 18 Candida strains. Researchers have found that garlic can be promising to reverse the effects of fungus growth.

However, research at the University of Melbourne showed that short-term oral doses of garlic were inconclusive.

In 2010 Iranian study compared the effectiveness of a thyme and garlic cream with clotrimazole, an antifungal cream used to treat vaginal yeast infections, thrush, athlete’s foot, Jock itch, and other conditions. They found no difference in the treatment response between the two.

Side effects of garlic yeast infection treatment

While some women have seen positive results when using garlic for a yeast infection, many have experienced less than desirable side effects.

Some side effects of oral garlic pills or consumption include:

  • bad breath
  • body odor
  • stomach ache
  • stomach ache
  • pharmacological interactio

Side effects of topical application of garlic can include:

  • pricking
  • vaginal discharge
  • urticaria
  • headache
  • nausea and vomit
  • Take away

Studies are inconclusive on whether garlic, garlic tablets, or garlic extract can provide a cure for yeast infections. However, its chemical properties have been shown to help stop the growth of Candida fungus responsible for yeast infections. Adding garlic to your diet can also prevent future yeast infections.

If you are more prone to natural remedies, ask your doctor to try a garlic-thyme cream instead of a traditional antifungal treatment.

If you are experiencing the symptoms of a yeast infection, contact your doctor for a diagnosis and go over treatment options.
